Hydrangea paniculata tree-like white-pink with flowers. Paniculate and tree hydrangeas: varieties, photos and descriptions. How to properly grow and care for hydrangeas

Its variety of types and colors allows you to create a piece of paradise in any garden.

Varieties of hydrangea grown in Russian gardens

  • Anabel is the most common of the tree hydrangea varieties. It was released quite a long time ago. The bush grows small and compact, its height is about one and a half meters. The crown is spreading and dome-shaped, reaching a diameter of 3 m. The stem is bare and gray in color. The leaves are very large, up to 30 cm in length, bright, rich green in color with a finely toothed edge. Until frost, the foliage retains its color. The flowers are white, round, about 2 cm in size, grouped into inflorescences-balls with a diameter of up to 30 cm. The flowering period is from early summer to September. The bush is characterized by rapid growth of up to 10 cm per year. Frost-resistant. Prefers slightly shaded areas.
  • Grandiflora- a magnificent bush of tree-like hydrangea with a spherical crown, up to 2 m in height and up to 3 m in diameter. Green ovate leaves up to 10 cm. Blooms in corymbose inflorescences of small flowers. During the entire flowering period from July to September, the color of the flowers changes several times. At first they are light green, then turn white, and towards the end they acquire a creamy tint. Growth per year is up to 30 cm. The plant prefers sunny places with slight partial shade. Grandiflora loves moist soil and does not tolerate drought. Moderately frost-resistant variety.
  • Tree hydrangea shrub variety Sterilis It has a round shape and reaches a height of 2-3 m. The foliage is green on top and has a bluish tint on the underside. The leaves are slightly serrated and up to 20 cm long. Its annual growth is about 20 cm. The inflorescences are dense, hemispherical in size, about 25 cm in size. The bush blooms with sterile light green flowers, which turn white over time. The plant prefers well-drained fertile soils, sunny areas with slight partial shade. The winter hardiness of the variety is average.
  • Kyushu- a variety of paniculate hydrangea. The bush has a fan-shaped crown up to 3 m in size and grows up to 2.5-3 m. The stems are colored red-brown. The leaves, pubescent, rich green in color on red petioles, are ovoid in shape. White flowers are collected in a wide panicle 15-25 cm long. Sterile flowers up to 2-3 cm consist of 4 white petals, which later turn pink. Honey bush. The plant does not tolerate stagnation of moisture in the soil and strong dry winds. The variety is fast growing and prefers partial shade. Frost resistance is good down to -25 degrees.
  • Vanilla Fraze- a very spectacular variety of paniculate hydrangea. It is a low bush with dark green foliage. The leaves are ovate and rough. It has very beautiful cone-shaped inflorescences up to 30 cm, distinguished by their color. At the beginning of flowering they are white, and by September the bottom of the cone-inflorescence acquires a pink-strawberry hue, and the top remains white. A fast-growing plant that recovers well after freezing. The shrub is able to withstand low temperatures down to –40 degrees.
  • Lime Light- a fairly popular variety of paniculate hydrangea, memorable for its lime-colored inflorescences. Gradually, the color of the cone-shaped inflorescences acquires a light lemon or white tint, and by autumn it turns slightly pink. The foliage is velvety dark green. The bush has very strong stems that can support the weight of large inflorescences. The variety does not require various supports and tying. The plant grows up to 2 m in height and width. Growth per year is about 25 cm. Prefers sunny and moist areas. Frost-resistant, young bushes should be covered in winter.
  • Pinky Winky- Belgian variety of paniculate hydrangea. The variety is famous for its bright colors of flowers and leaves. An important feature of the variety is its strong shoots, so the plant does not need support. The bush of this variety is small and compact, the crown has a rounded shape. The inflorescences are cone-shaped panicles of white color in autumn, acquiring purple tones. Their color changes gradually, which makes it possible to observe flowers of different tones in one panicle. The leaves are dark green and have pubescence along the veins. The foliage also turns red-purple in autumn. Young bushes need shelter during the cold season. Adult plants tolerate frosts down to -25 degrees.
  • White Ball frost-resistant bush of a large-leaf variety up to a meter high. It blooms with spherical inflorescences of snow-white color. The foliage is rich green and large. Flowers appear on young shoots and shoots from the previous year. Prefers sunny places with slight partial shade.
  • Romance Blue– winter-hardy variety of large-leaved hydrangea. The plant grows up to 1.5 m. It blooms on the shoots of the new and last season with spherical inflorescences about 25 cm in diameter. Double flowers of blue-blue hue. Leaves, elongated green. Loves sun, moisture and well-drained soil.
  • Endless Summer- "Endless summer". The name was given due to the peculiarity of blooming not only on the shoots of the previous season, but on the shoots of the current year. The bush is small, compact, up to 1.5 m. Depending on the acidity of the soil, the color of the spherical inflorescences varies from blue to pink. The variety has good winter hardiness and does not require shelter.

How to distinguish types and varieties of hydrangea?

In reality, this is quite difficult to do. The species should be determined at the time of flowering, when all parts of the bush can be assessed. By paying attention to the structure of the inflorescences, the ratio of sterile and fertile flowers, color, shape and hairiness of the leaves, the degree of lignification of the stems, you can correctly determine the type of shrub and correctly select agrotechnical methods.

Positive qualities of hydrangea:

  • thanks to the large species and varietal diversity, you can choose the shrub that is most suitable for your conditions;
  • many different species allow the plant to be used as a hedge, in mixborders and flower beds of various types;
  • hydrangeas are quite resistant to pests and diseases;
  • after damage, the plant quickly recovers;
  • can grow on soils of varying fertility, tolerates close groundwater, loves acidified soils;
  • long flowering period;
  • collected inflorescences can be used in dried flower compositions;
  • decoctions and tinctures of hydrangea leaves and roots have medicinal properties.

Unfortunately, not all types of this beautiful shrub tolerate cold and can be grown in Russia. When maintaining hydrangea, you must strictly follow the rules of care, and then this beauty will delight you with gorgeous blooms.

Kinds

Hydrangea

The place of origin of this species is North America. It is a shrub that grows up to 3 m tall. The leaves are large, without pubescence, serrated, green above and bluish below. The inflorescences appear on annual branches and are flat or spherical in size, 15-20 cm in size. At first, the flowers are green, but when fully bloomed, they turn white or cream. Prefers to grow in shaded areas and does not tolerate drought.

This variety is quite unpretentious; it is not afraid of frost and shaded areas. Thanks to its rapid growth, this variety quickly grows new shoots. In temperate climates, the plant blooms from July to November. The species is not very rich in varietal diversity.

Popular varieties of tree hydrangea:

  1. « Annabelle» large spreading shrub, tolerates wintering well, has beautiful lush white inflorescences. The leaves reach 15 cm, maintaining their green color until frost.
  2. « White Anna» – inflorescences from pale pink to purple.
  3. « Grandiflora"- large snow-white inflorescences.
  4. « Invisibelle Spirit"- has large bright pink inflorescences that lighten over time.
  5. « Incrediball"- white inflorescences, surprising with their large size; the bush reaches 1.5 m.
  6. « Sterilis» – spherical white inflorescences.
  7. « Pink Piction"-inflorescences are pale pink.
  8. « White House“- a dense bush about a meter, the inflorescence is a corymb in the center of which there are fruit-bearing flowers, and sterile flowers along the edge.
  9. « Hayes Starburst» – double light green flowers in the shape of a ball with a diameter of up to 25 cm. Bush up to 1.3 m high.

Hydrangea paniculata

Its distribution area is Japan, China, southern Sakhalin. It has the appearance of a bush, about 2 m tall, and can reach 5 m. The stems of the bush quickly become woody, which allows the plant to survive wintering well. The leaves are elongated and pubescent. Flowers are formed on new shoots and have a pyramid shape.

The inflorescence is a mixture of fertile and non-fertile flowers. At the beginning of flowering they are colored greenish, then turn white, and by autumn they acquire a terracotta or light purple color.

The color saturation depends on the weather and the degree of illumination. The warmer and sunnier the weather, the brighter the hydrangea flowers.

The flowering of the shrub begins at the end of summer and lasts throughout the autumn.

This species prefers slightly shaded areas and in very bright sunlight the flowers become smaller. The species is not picky about conditions and tolerates frost well even without shelter. The variety has a rich varietal assortment.

Varieties of paniculate hydrangea:

To grow plants in pots, breeders have developed low-growing varieties no more than a meter high:

  • "Pinky Winky"
  • Brussels Lace;
  • "Bomshel";
  • "Last Post";
  • Darts Little Dot;
  • "Bobo" (lemon green flowers, turning pink over time).

Hydrangea large-leaved or garden

It grows wild in Japan and Sakhalin. The height of the varietal forms is about 2 m. Low-growing varieties for pot growing have a height of up to half a meter. The bush does not winter well, the shoots become woody in the second year. Garden hydrangea does not tolerate limestone. The foliage is rich green. Flower buds form in the fall.

To overwinter, the plant should be covered with straw, spruce branches or non-woven material. It is imperative to remove the shelter in time in the spring, otherwise the plant may rot.

Flowering begins in mid-summer. The size of the flowers is about 3 cm.

Varieties of large-leaved hydrangea:

  • « Japanese» – umbrella-shaped inflorescences;
  • « Changeable"- flowers are hemispherical in shape and change color depending on the reaction of the soil and the presence of metal ions in it. Thanks to this specific property of the variable hydrangea, there are many varieties of this species. On acidic soils the flowers are blue or blue, on neutral and alkaline soils they are pink or red. For brighter coloring, you can artificially change the reaction of the soil by adding iron sulfate or alum.

Frost-resistant varieties are remontant. The flowering of such varieties begins with buds on the shoots of the second year and continues on the stems of the current season.

Frost-resistant varieties:

  • "Blue Haven";
  • "Firewox Pink";
  • "Mini Penny"
  • White Ball;
  • "Coco Blanc";
  • "Endles Summer" - white or blue flowers;
  • "Romance" - double flowers;
  • "Expression" - double bright pink jagged flowers in the form of corymbs;
  • "Ever Peppermint" - flowers on the edges are light, and the middle is pink or blue;
  • "Red Sensation" - red inflorescences and burgundy-colored stems.

Hydrangea petiolate

Liana-like bush up to 25 m long. To bloom, it needs support, to which it is attached using aerial roots. The foliage is dark green, smooth and heart-shaped. Fragrant flowers are collected in umbels measuring 15-20 cm, the color varies from green-white to lilac.

The liana is frost-resistant, but can be damaged in severe frosts. To avoid freezing, the young plant should be removed from its support and covered for the winter. It can grow without support as a ground cover plant, forming a thick “carpet”. Prefers a shaded place. It is used for landscaping gazebos, decorating various slopes and walls.

Hydrangea variegated or variegated

This species is also called ground cover, Brettschneider hydrangea or Himalayan hydrangea. The plant has strong woody shoots, milky-white viburnum-shaped inflorescences and elongated ovoid leaves. The shoots are reddish in color and have hairs of peeling bark.

By autumn, the flowers turn pink-purple. The shrub is shade-tolerant, frost-resistant and can tolerate dry times. It reaches a height of up to 3 m. Cut inflorescences look beautiful in dried flowers.

Hydrangea oakleaf

The species is named so because of the similarity of its leaves to oak leaves. The foliage is rich green above, velvety and whitish below. By September the leaves turn red. The bush grows no more than 1.5 m. The plant blooms in panicle inflorescences. In the cold season it freezes and does not bloom. By pruning the shoots in the fall and covering the root system, the plant can be grown as an ornamental bush with luxurious leaves.

Ash or gray hydrangea

The bush has good winter hardiness and is moisture-loving. Grows up to 2 m. Corymbose inflorescences of small sterile flowers. The leaves are oval shaped and pale green in color. Looks good as a hedge.

Hortensia Sargent

A less common species, blooming with light lilac flowers collected in corymbs. The stems have a reddish tint. The leaves are large, up to 25 cm in length. After freezing, it grows young shoots well and can bloom.

Hydrangea serrata

Plant up to 1.5 m high with large inflorescences in balls. Grows well in sunny areas. The inflorescences are two-colored. The color of the flowers will change depending on the acidity of the soil. The bred variety of this species, “Blue Bird” or blue bird, has blue-colored flowers and leaves. The species can withstand frost when covered.

Hydrangea radiata

A fast-growing shrub about 2.5 m tall. It blooms in white clusters of umbrella-shaped flowers. The leaves are lanceolate-oval in shape. Flowering lasts no more than a month.

To grow shrubs in Russian gardens, it is better to choose species and varieties adapted to the Russian climate. The plant must have good winter hardiness. Otherwise, the bush will not please you with luxurious flowers.

They feel great in our climate zone tree and paniculate varieties of shrubs. The garden type is more capricious and is better suited for pot growing.

Hydrangea paniculata combines two qualities that can hardly be found together in flowering plants - amazing unpretentiousness and long-lasting flowering of amazing beauty. Hydrangea bushes can be found in the Moscow region, Sakhalin, and Japan due to their versatility. Of course, these plants behave differently in different climatic conditions. In central Russia, the average height of such a hydrangea is two meters, while in China or Japan it can reach ten. The flowering of the bush also depends on temperatures and can last from three to five months. There are quite a large number of varieties of paniculata hydrangea, which are already considered classics, while some are just gaining popularity.

Unfortunately, it is hardly possible to cover in detail all existing varieties of paniculata hydrangea. Therefore, in this chapter we will focus on the most popular varieties of this plant.

Grandiflora

This variety of hydrangea is recognized by its branched and dense bushes, on which large conical inflorescences are located with a dominance of sterile flowers. The crown of Grandiflora bushes has a rounded shape and rises at a distance of about two meters above the soil level.

The leaves of this lilac variety have a deep dark emerald hue, and are slightly rough and velvety to the touch. With the onset of the growing season, Grandiflora takes more time to acquire leaf cover. Flowering lasts for shrubs for three months - from July to September. The flowers themselves grow in lush paniculate inflorescences and are painted in light, delicate colors. The initial white shade of the flowers gradually turns into pastel pink.

Landing Features

Before planting Grandiflora, the gardener must take into account the following features of this shrub:

  • this variety of hydrangea is considered light-loving, but can also grow in partial shade (which, however, affects the splendor of flowering);
  • Grandiflora develops frost resistance over time. It is believed that the older the bush, the better it survives winters, coping with temperatures as low as -25 degrees. If a young plant encounters severe frosts in the first years without additional shelter, it may not survive until spring;
  • unlike many other flowering plants, it has a positive attitude towards increased acidity levels in the soil. Due to this feature, it reacts negatively to soil liming (which reduces acidity);
  • Grandiflora bushes take root well even in areas with polluted air.

In order for Grandiflora to take root on the site and delight the gardener with stable flowering, it is important to follow certain rules for planting and growing it:

  • for planting, it is advisable to select areas where the plant will be protected from strong gusts of wind (there is a danger of branches breaking off, especially in young seedlings);
  • in order to prevent the seedlings from freezing in the first winter, it is advisable to cover them with the arrival of cold weather with special heat-insulating materials;
  • To improve the condition of the branches of the bush, it is advisable to regularly remove faded shoots to a well-developed node. It is also recommended to remove shoots that did not survive the winter, so that more viable specimens will subsequently grow in their place. The most suitable time for pruning is considered to be early spring - before the sap begins to flow. If sap flow has already begun, removal is postponed until the first leaves bloom;
  • Grandiflora bushes can be planted either individually or in group plantings - together with perennial plants and shrub mixborders;
  • Shrub hydrangea can be grown as a standard plant or for further forcing.

Important! If you are going to cover hydrangeas for the winter, then you should take into account that such actions lead to an acceleration of their flowering in the next growing season. This rule does not apply to young shrubs, since in the first years they are not able to bloom.

Kyushu

Hydrangea variety Kyushu can grow up to three meters in height, while the width of its crown will be equal to the total height of the bush. Despite the density of the branches, visually the plants of this variety seem graceful and light, and the straight shoots of a red-brown hue give the shrub a vase-like shape.

The dark green hue of the glossy, shiny leaves is combined with the dark red color of the roots. It is this “glossy effect” that is the hallmark of hydrangeas of the Kyushu variety, allowing them to be unmistakably distinguished from other “related” shrubs.

Most flowers have a light or snow-white hue that does not change throughout the entire flowering period. The flowers themselves are grouped into wide inflorescences, which are characterized by the predominance of fertile flowers over sterile ones. The timing of flowering of the shrub largely depends on the growing region - in a mild warm climate, Kyushu blooms from June to October, in the northern regions - from July to September.

Features of planting and growing

Mega Mindy

A distinctive feature of Mega Mindy, which makes it so popular in decorative terms, is its long and very bright flowering, which is a decoration for any garden. It is noteworthy that even dried inflorescences, after the end of sap flow, remain on the branches throughout the winter. The average height of shrubs of this variety is about one and a half meters, which is considered a fairly moderate value, which is compensated by the external characteristics of the bush.

Strong vertical shoots are able to hold heavy inflorescences without breaking off and without disturbing the overall “composition” of the shrub, which has a dense and at the same time compact crown. The leaves of the Mega Mindy hydrangea are painted in a classic deep green shade, gradually turning into yellow closer to autumn.

Flowering for shrubs of this variety lasts about four months, starting in July and ending in October. In this regard, Mega Mindy feels better in the southern regions of Russia, where October is not accompanied by the arrival of the first frosts. The flowers of such hydrangeas have an interesting feature of completely changing their shade during flowering. In the first half of summer, the flowers are white, but as autumn approaches they acquire a rich red-pink hue.

Growing conditions

Mega Mindy is a fast-growing variety of hydrangea that does not require close attention. The most important thing to pay attention to and what will affect the entire subsequent development of the shrub is the condition of the soil. Fertile, organic-rich soils allow the shrub to grow without much trouble or effort on the part of the gardener, while heavy and chalky soils will pose a serious threat to Mega Mindy.

When growing shrubs, you need to take into account the following features:

Pink Diamond

As you can guess from the name, the flowers of this hydrangea variety are colored in rich pink shades (sometimes with a lilac-purple undertone). In inflorescences that have a pyramidal shape, mostly sterile flowers are found. The inflorescences themselves are elongated and quite narrow even at the base.

The average height of the Pink Diamond hydrangea is two meters, and the bush itself consists of straight, almost unbranched branches and prominent dark red young shoots. The leaves of this variety of hydrangeas have a classic rich green tint and are rough to the touch.

It is curious that depending on the region in which the shrub grows, its flowers acquire different shades. For example, in the flowerbeds of the Moscow region, Pink Diamond opens with flowers of a lilac hue, while summer residents from other regions may also have dark pink specimens. The color palette of flowers is influenced by climatic conditions and the condition of the soil in which the plant is immersed. Like most other hydrangeas, Pink Diamond gradually changes the shade of its flowers during flowering - from delicate to deep pink. Flowering lasts from July to September.

Features of cultivation

Floribunda

Unlike most other hydrangea varieties, whose flowers change color throughout the flowering period, Floribunda flowers remain snow-white, creating a spectacular contrast with the dark green foliage. Sometimes there is a slight pinking of those flowers that have been most in contact with the sun's rays, and this usually happens closer to autumn. Lacey cream flowers are grouped in conical panicles. Both fertile and sterile flowers can be found in the inflorescence.

Other varieties

Other varieties of paniculate hydrangea that deserve no less attention are indicated in the table below.

Table 1. Varieties of paniculata hydrangea

VarietyDescription

Shrubs with such an unusual name are recognized by their spreading crown and pyramidal-shaped inflorescences. Otherwise, the Magic Candle variety has characteristics average for paniculate hydrangea - a two-meter shrub that blooms from the second half of June to September and does well in shaded areas with acidic soil. Suitable for planting in central Russia, as it is not afraid of frost and recovers well after it.

A variety that arrived in Russia from Holland, and is distinguished by the beauty of not only the inflorescences, but also the leaves themselves. The yellow-green shade of the flowers of the Limelight variety is very unusual for hydrangeas, and therefore formed the basis of the name. As autumn approaches, the shade changes to a more familiar pink color. Due to the strong and strong branches, shrubs of this variety are often given unusual geometric shapes

Compact shrub that does not grow higher than one and a half meters. The colors of the flowers range from white to dark red. The variety is actively used for group planting. Poorly adapted to low temperatures and requires covering material

A miniature variety, reaching a maximum height of one and a half meters. The shades of the flowers of the Anabel bush depend on the composition of the fertilizers, and therefore the most unusual combinations can be found on the same bush. The standard color shade is white. the variety has a long lifespan - with proper care, such shrubs last for several decades

The height of Vanilla Fries shrubs reaches three meters, which is considered above average. The length of the shoots reaches forty centimeters, and the shoots themselves are distinguished by their health and are able to easily survive even the coldest winters in the Moscow region. Flower shades range from creamy white to soft pink

Bobo variety shrubs are considered dwarf, and therefore are excellent for growing on balconies or summer terraces in special containers. Unlike most hydrangeas, Bobo has a negative attitude towards direct sunlight, which only reduces its inflorescences. Flowering of the bush begins as standard - in July and ends just before frost. There are plants with soft pink, cream and yellow-green inflorescences

About care

In this chapter we will focus on some basic elements of caring for paniculata hydrangea, which were mentioned when describing the varieties, namely, we will talk about the nuances of watering and fertilizing this plant.

Watering

As mentioned earlier, watering hydrangea depends on weather conditions. However, if we take average climatic conditions, which involve a moderate number of rainy and hot days, then it is recommended to water the shrub twice a week. One plant requires about three buckets of clean water.

Hydrangea has several “wishes” for water:

  • water should not contain impurities of chlorine and other foreign elements;
  • Rainwater is well suited for watering shrubs;
  • The healthiest thing for hydrangeas is settled water, which is kept in special baths or barrels before watering.

When watering, it is important to ensure that the water does not come into contact with the above-ground part of the plant - leaves and flowers, as this can harm them. All liquid must fall into the soil, from where it will subsequently be “scooped up” by the hydrangea’s root system.

Top dressing

During the entire growing season, the shrub needs feeding three times. At the same time, the composition of the fertilizer varies depending on a certain period - during the awakening of the hydrangea, it requires some substances, and when preparing for hibernation, completely different ones, which must be taken into account.

When feeding paniculata hydrangea, it is advisable to follow the following scheme:

  • when the first shoots appear, the gardener will need complex mineral fertilizing, which will give the plant strength and allow it to “grow” green mass faster;
  • the signal for the next feeding is the formation of buds, which begins in the second half of June. In order to promote flowering, you need to make a fertilizer from potassium sulfide and superphosphate (in proportions 7:4). For one shrub you will need to take 100 grams of the mixture and dissolve it in a bucket of water, then water the soil around the hydrangea;

  • In order to begin preparing hydrangea for wintering, it is recommended to use a mullein-based infusion. To prepare such an infusion, take manure and clean water, mixing them in proportions of 1:3. In order for the resulting substance to have the desired effect, it must be infused for at least seven days. The finished concentrate can be used only after it is re-diluted with water (1:10), otherwise the bush may get burned.

The idea that the more fertilizer a hydrangea receives during the budding period, the better its subsequent flowering will be, is deeply mistaken. If a shrub is overfed, its branches may not be able to cope with heavy inflorescences and begin to break off, which severely injures the plants.

Important! Annual shrubs do not need fertilizer.

One of the most important feedings that gardeners often underestimate is autumn feeding. Of course, it will not lead to winter flowering, but this does not mean that it can be neglected. The condition in which the bush wakes up in the spring depends on preparation for wintering. Proper fertilizer will allow hydrangea to comfortably survive the winter and quickly bloom when summer arrives. You can read below about which options for autumn feeding of paniculata hydrangea have been repeatedly tested in practice and have shown their effectiveness.

More detailed information can be found in a separate article on our portal.

Paniculata hydrangea is a flower that has caught the hearts of gardeners all over the world. Hydrangea is loved for its abundant and long flowering from spring to late autumn and is often called the flower “Endless Summer”. Hydrangea is an absolute favorite when it comes to decorating a summer cottage with flowers. In Japan, hydrangea is considered a miracle of nature; residents poetically call it the flower of the purple sun.

The long flowering period begins in early summer and continues until late autumn, almost until the first frost. Gardeners and landscape designers are attracted by the variety of shapes and colors of hydrangea.

Considering that paniculate hydrangea is a variety of perennial plants and is unpretentious to climatic conditions, the use of shrubs in landscape design has become simply irreplaceable.

Hydrangea: varieties and types.

The hydrangea shrub has many species; they say that the total number of species and varieties of hydrangea is close to a hundred. The domestic gardener does not have much time on the weekend to pay increased attention to flowers, which is why the least demanding varieties of hydrangea are considered favorites that do not require endless care:

  • Hydrangea paniculata;
  • hydrangea;
  • large-leaved hydrangea.

Paniculata hydrangea in the garden

The most common variety is paniculata hydrangea. Paniculata hydrangea grows completely freely in the wild on the Japanese islands, China and the far east of our homeland. Bright inflorescences in the form of panicles reach 25 centimeters.

Depending on the variety, paniculate hydrangea is able to change the palette of the inflorescence from white and soft green to bright pink at the end of flowering. The first flowers form at the end of June and bloom throughout the summer, until the first frost in October.

Benefits of paniculate hydrangea.

Today on our agenda is paniculate hydrangea. In the middle zone and even in the northern regions, these are the shrubs that winter well. Paniculata hydrangea does not require any additional shelter. Only necessary around the bush sprinkle the tree trunk circle with peat, covering the root system. Such events are enough for the bush to overwinter well. The main advantages of hydrangea shrubs:

  • Grows well in places where there is no sun in shady areas of the garden;
  • As a result of rapid growth, it begins to delight with flowers already 3-4 years after planting;
  • An unpretentious variety of paniculate hydrangea responds steadily to low temperatures;
  • In landscape design it can be planted as a shrub or as a standard small tree;
  • An incredible variety of types and varieties to suit every refined taste.

Paniculata hydrangea care and propagation

Note that almost all varieties of paniculate hydrangea prefer the sun, but if the bush is in the open sun throughout the daylight hours, flowering will proceed faster. The color scheme will also quickly change from soft beige to bright red.

Experienced gardeners recommend planting hydrangeas where at noon the plant is completely in the shade or at least in openwork shade. By fulfilling these conditions, the flowering of the plant will be quite long and more abundant. It’s even better if the bush is planted on the side where there is sun until two o’clock in the afternoon; these are ideal conditions for hydrangea.

Any type and variety of hydrangea has increased requirements for soil moisture. During dry summers, watering should be done twice a week. Typically, 30-40 liters should be planned for an adult bush; 20 liters per watering is enough for a young hydrangea bush. The basic rule is the constant presence of moisture.

The second thing you should definitely pay attention to is the nutrition of the plant. All types of hydrangea “love” to eat. It is necessary to use a full complex of mineral fertilizers, preferably combined with Organic throughout the entire period growing season.

Tip: Mulch the root system with pine bark or needle litter from any coniferous tree, and the plant will thank you with incredibly beautiful flowering.

Acidic soil has a positive effect on hydrangea inflorescences. The optimal soil acidity level is 6 -7 pH.

Paniculata hydrangea. Top 10 best varieties.

Our top ten consists of the most popular panicle hydrangea varieties.

1st place: hydrangea paniculata Polar Dipper.

The first place is taken Polar Dipper. Hydrangea is a well-spreading shrub, the height of the bush is 1.5 - 2 meters.

The size of the flowers, that is, one flowering ear, is 40-45 cm. At the moment, this is the largest ear that can be found in the species diversity of paniculate hydrangea.

The paniculate hydrangea Polar Dipper blooms with a palette of white and cream colors, and ends in soft pink tones. Flowering begins in mid-July and ends in the southern regions in October.

2nd place: Hydrangea paniculata Limelight.

In second place is deservedly the variety of paniculate hydrangea with the name Limelight. Hydrangea paniculata Limelight fits the description of a compact and elegant bush. The height of the bush reaches 120-150 cm. size of peduncles Limelight 25-35 cm.

Limelight begins to bloom in colors reminiscent of the exotic lime fruit. The tone of the flower is lemon-yellow, but not very pronounced, sometimes more greenish-yellow, and it goes into winter with snow-white flowers. Agree, the spectacle is not usually beautiful.

The undeniable advantage is that paniculate hydrangea in our top 10 contains varieties that do not get wet from rain. The flowers do not stick together, do not close, and do not depend on winds or rains. The inflorescences always have a marketable, beautiful appearance throughout the entire season. Erect hydrangea bushes do not fall apart, they are always elegant, collected and incredibly beautiful.

3rd place: paniculata hydrangea Vanilla Fraze

Fireworks in the garden, there is no other name for this variety. Unpretentious hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Fraze, planting and caring for which is carried out in open ground, has won the special favor of beauty connoisseurs. The Vanilla Fries variety became the winner in 2015 at all specialized exhibitions and received many awards.

The Vanilla Fraze bush is unusually beautiful; the height of the bush in central Russia does not exceed 150 cm. The flower stalks reach a size of 30 cm. The paniculate hydrangea Vanilla Fraze usually blooms at the end of June.

Note that almost all paniculata hydrangeas begin to bloom in mid-July and last until October. However, the Vanilla Fraze variety begins to bloom in June.

Flowering begins Vanilla Fraze with the formation of white flowers. Gradually, literally after two to three weeks, you can observe how the lower part of the bud changes its snow-white color to a pink tint. The cone of the flower remains completely white. Exquisite and solemnly majestic hydrangeas, occupying a leading position in the family of the same name, are common in the wild nature of Asia, southern Europe and North America. On Russian territory in the Far Eastern region there are two species of this ornamental plant.

Paniculates are also cultivated. New varieties are especially popular among domestic gardeners. These magnificent plants are successfully grown in almost all, even the most climatically difficult regions of the country. In this article we will present an overview of hydrangea varieties.

Type of hydrangea paniculata

This plant is very attractive and has excellent regenerative ability in case of partial damage caused by freezing. New varieties of hydrangea paniculata have high frost resistance, allowing the plant to overwinter under minimal or no shelter from spruce paws and spandex (in places protected from northern winds and with a sufficiently high layer of snow cover).

The self-explanatory name of the species determines the shape of the inflorescence, which is a large, long-blooming panicle. A distinctive feature of some varieties of this species is the rare ability to gradually change the color of flowers. Cut inflorescences are often used in winter bouquets. is represented by numerous varieties, differing in the size and structure of the bush, the color of the inflorescences, and the duration of flowering. The popular ones, which we will discuss below, have long been recognized by gardeners.

Grandiflora

A light-loving ornamental variety with classic large white cone-shaped inflorescences and a predominance of sterile flowers that turn pink during flowering - this is what the description of popular varieties looks like. The bush, reaching two meters in height, with a regular rounded crown, is distinguished not only by the beauty of its flowers, but also by the decorativeness of its leaves, oblong and velvety with a pointed tip, which bloom quite late. Flowering period is from July to September. The degree of winter hardiness increases with age; young plants should be covered with the onset of winter.

Features of the variety

Resistance to gas pollution allows Grandiflora to be grown within the city. It is often used in park interiors, in group and single plantings.

Grows excellently in well-lit places with loose, fertile, acidic soils. very demanding on watering and fertilizing. The magnificent decorative appearance of the bush is maintained by annual spring pruning. Can be grown by forming a trunk.

Hydrangea Limelight

A late-blooming variety with large, dense, wide-conical inflorescences that have a distinct light green tint at the beginning of flowering, turning into soft pink tones in the fall. Limelight enchants with the beauty of its dense inflorescences of sterile flowers. The shrub is quite compact, reaches one and a half meters in height and has a neat rounded crown. Not only the inflorescences are decorative; the velvety dark green oblong leaves with a sharp apex emphasize the sophistication of the plant. Blooming from mid-summer to September, hydrangea is light-loving, develops well on light acidic soils and absolutely does not tolerate liming. The variety is planted in illuminated areas.

Young plants are especially vulnerable in harsh snowless winters, so they will have to be covered in the first years. Like other new varieties of Hydrangea paniculata, Limelight increases its level of winter hardiness with age. The plant requires rational care: watering and fertilizing during the growing season are required, as well as sanitary and shaping pruning, which must be carried out either before the start of sap flow or during the period of leaf bloom. The highly decorative nature of the bush is used for planting it in single or group ensembles that decorate park and garden interiors. Limelight and other varieties of paniculata hydrangea, the most popular in Russia, are valued by gardeners as the basis for floral arrangements and winter bouquets.

Hydrangea Vanilla Fries

A favorite variety of many gardeners with exquisite and beautiful pink and white pyramidal inflorescences. The spreading shrub with a diameter of one and a half meters and a height of two meters is classified as late flowering.

The inflorescences, consisting of sterile snow-white flowers that bloom at first, quickly turn pink and acquire a rich pink color. This change in shade is characteristic of many paniculate hydrangeas. New varieties have a more pronounced change in shade and a surprisingly long flowering time. These include Vanilla Frize, used as a spectacular tapeworm surrounded by bright perennials in lawn compositions. The shrub is frost-resistant, light-loving, prefers well-moistened fertile soils with an acidic reaction. It is planted in brightly lit areas, protected from the winds. Periodic generous watering and fertilizing are required. Pruning of weak, frozen or faded shoots is carried out in early spring before the buds swell.

Hortense Kyushu

Decorative early flowering shrub with white inflorescences of sterile and predominantly fertile flowers, which later smoothly turn into pinkish. The spreading bush, reaching three meters in height, is distinguished by dark green glossy foliage and medium-sized inflorescences with a small number of sterile flowers. Despite their height, the bushes create the impression of transparent lightness, and this quality of the plant is often used in landscape decoration and effectively played up by garden interior designers. White flowers, collected in long conical inflorescences with a wide base, have a pleasant aroma.

Hydrangeas paniculata. New varieties, however, tolerate partial shade and can grow well in areas with light and acidic soils. This is also typical for Kyushu. The shrub has moderate winter hardiness, which increases with age. The variety is moisture-loving, demanding on fertilizing, and tolerates air pollution very well, which is invaluable in urban conditions. Therefore, Kyushu is often planted in city parks, shrub mixborders, and Japanese gardens. Pruning is carried out in early spring, shortening shoots with faded inflorescences to a developed node with existing buds and cutting out weak and broken branches.

Hydrangea Pinky Winky

A beautiful bush with pink-red inflorescences, in which sterile flowers predominate, has a lush, rounded crown reaching a two-meter diameter. The decorative perennial has been productive for almost fifty years. The annual growth of shoots is 25-30 centimeters. The flowers are collected in long, up to 18-20 centimeters inflorescences with a change in shade from purple at the base of the cone-shaped panicle to a snow-white tip.

Light green oblong leaves with pointed tips and serrated edges also add decorativeness to the bush. Hydrangea Pinky Winky is used to decorate estates, gardens and park areas, often planted as a hedge or in single and group plantings in ensembles and contrasting compositions. This variety does not tolerate drought, soil compaction and the presence of lime in it; it prefers sheltered areas lit by the sun with fertile acidic soils. If there is abundant flowering, it is recommended to tie the bush. Young plants are covered for the winter.

Tree and paniculate hydrangeas: new varieties

More recently, one garden form of paniculate hydrangea, Grandiflora, was grown in Russian gardens. Today on the domestic market you can find various types and varieties created earlier, as well as new products bred by foreign breeders.

The hydrangeas listed above (new and better varieties) differ in few characteristics from the Grandiflora, which is well known to gardeners, since in order to determine the basic qualities of a plant, it is preferable to test it by growing it for several years. However, when choosing a variety, you can pay attention to such features as the shape and structure of the inflorescences, their color and the height of the bush.

Inflorescence shape

Hydrangeas paniculata, the new varieties of which are described above, have conical inflorescences of different lengths - from 10 to 35 centimeters. Some inflorescences are more elongated, others are almost round, with a slightly noticeable tip. The structure is also different: large sterile flowers compact and make it heavier, while flowers of different types (small bisexual and large sterile) lighten it and make it openwork. They are elegant, do not bend to the sides and do not break from the wind.

When choosing varieties, gardeners are guided by their own preferences. Varieties with large dense flowers include Grandiflora, Limelight, Vanilla Fries. Graceful openwork panicles are characteristic of the varieties Kyushu, Pinky Winky, Great Star and others.

Shades of inflorescences

White color is the basic color of the inflorescences, but the shade changes during flowering. The varieties with the most pronounced snow-white flowers are Vanilla Fries, Great Star, creamy - Grandiflora, Kyushu, greenish - Limelight. Pinky Winky has a deep pink hue. In the vast majority of varieties, by autumn the flowers turn pink with varying degrees of color intensity.

Shrub height

Hydrangeas paniculata (new varieties such as Pink Diamond, Kyushu and Phantom) have more pronounced vertical growth of stems, strong but less branching shoots. These bushes are quite tall (two to four meters).

There are also low-growing varieties, not exceeding one meter, that are excellent for rock gardens and container growing - Pinky Winky, Darts Little Dot, Last Post and others.

Experienced gardeners appreciate the presented decorative varieties. A review of the best varieties will help novice gardeners choose the variety they like best.
