Rector of the Pirogov Medical University Nikolai Volodin about his dismissal.

A scandal surrounding the medical university erupted after Izvestia published material about strange lists of applicants. The university management began an inspection after our newspaper contacted us. Now the dismissed rector of the Russian National Research Medical University. N.I. Pirogov (RNIMU) Nikolai Volodin in an exclusive interview with Izvestia stated his point of view on what is happening.

- Do you already know about the order of the Ministry of Health and Social Development?

Yes. In the morning I signed it. And he did it without hesitation, since this was the decision of a higher authority. The mood is wonderful. Even my shoulders straightened from the load I was carrying. And he carried it with dignity.

- You said earlier that you were not going to write a letter of resignation?

The founder of the university, the Ministry of Health and Social Development, believes that I am not coping with my responsibilities. This means the founder is right. This is a decision of a higher authority.

- What did the internal investigation show - where did the “ghosts” appear on the lists of applicants?

Neither I nor the members of the admissions committee, who are now under suspicion, are to blame for this. We found ourselves hostage to a situation that was highly professionally and very competently fabricated by a certain group of people. They had “their hands” in the selection committee. One person was enough there, and he took advantage of the informal atmosphere in the commission. In the evenings, this employee entered fictitious names in portions.

- But why didn’t anyone notice the trick before? Until recently, you argued that this was impossible.

Everything was done very cleanly. But we ourselves identified these “ghosts”. I remember well the morning of August 2, when you came to me with a letter from the programmer Simak, who noticed an anomaly. Yes, I said then that this couldn’t happen. But when you left, I gave you the task of checking everything. We counted all night. And at nine in the morning on August 3, 626 names had already been removed from the list. It was we who announced the new ranking of applicants and reported everything to the minister. We called all the guys, and they showed up for enrollment. And not a single person from this year’s applicants was harmed.

- Now the press reports the amount of the bribe that was paid for admission to your university - 400 thousand rubles.

This is just a bluff, wildness. Well, let them bring me at least one person who paid. Why such bribes when you can come with your scores to the admissions committee and quite officially sign a training contract for 80–90 thousand - depending on the faculty. And immediately become a student.

- Have you already identified the saboteur?

It is now very difficult to determine. Of course I have my suspicions. If the competent authorities ask, I will express my point of view. This entire campaign pursued one goal - to undermine the authority of the rector. I tell you this officially. This is unrealistic - 626 names of “ghosts” among the applicants. Someone really wanted us to fail the reception plan.

- Do you have many enemies?

In 2007, I came to a university that was renting out 10.5 thousand square meters. m of area. There was a fish shop, bathhouses, confectionery shops, restaurants, bowling alleys, billiard halls, car services, parking lots, toy factories, and there was a place for entertainment in the student dormitory. All dorm kitchens were rented out to the Konkovsky market. And now there is none of this. I threw away this dirt. We have been suing tenants for a year now to get them to repay their debts.

- So, those whose financial interests you have infringed may be involved here?

Not only. For many, I am an inconvenient figure. My students now walk through the cleanest corridors. And before everything was spit on and dirty. Now no one smokes in the building. From September 1, a 200 m area around the university has been declared non-smoking.

The audiences have become completely different. Without undue modesty, I can say that in Russia today there is no other university of this level in terms of development. We are in seventh place in the ranking for scientific publishing activities. And in 13th place in the citation index after Moscow State University, Leningrad State University and 5-6 other universities. We have equipment that no university in Russia currently has. In the list of 29 national universities, ours is the only medical one. We have done all this in the last three years. And now there is an undermining of the institution, which should be set as an example.

-Aren't you going to fight?

And with whom? I was open to all journalists. What do they show on television - this abomination, this dirty trick? Nobody wants to just figure it out and think about it.
