In Russia, on November 5, 2017, each passenger will be able to bring hand luggage weighing at least 5 kg into the aircraft cabin. This limit may be increased by the carrier.

You can take 5 kg on board the plane when purchasing air tickets at any of the fares:

You can always check whether your hand luggage is the right size at the check-in counters at the airport in a specially designated area.

Due to repeated attempts by terrorists to carry individual components of explosive devices on board aircraft, since 2006 there have been serious bans on the carriage of liquids in hand luggage.

The following liquids fall into the discharge:

  • cosmetics and toiletries (perfumes, shampoos, gels, lotions, sprays, oils, paints, creams, deodorants, shaving foams, mascara, lipstick and toothpaste)
  • food products (drinks, canned food, caviar, syrups, soups, cheeses, jams, homemade preparations, etc.).

You will need to put all liquids in one transparent resealable bag no larger than 20x20 cm. You are allowed to take only one such bag on board the plane. Everything else that does not fit in this bag will simply have to be thrown away.

Baby food, dietary products and medications (with a prescription or doctor's note) that may be needed during the flight do not need to be placed in a plastic bag. By the way, don't be surprised if security staff may ask you to open the baby food and try it.

The volume of liquids that are allowed to be carried on board the aircraft

The total volume of liquids in the bag, together with the packaging in which they are located, should not exceed 1 liter, and the volume of each individual liquid (also taking into account the packaging) should be within 100 ml.

For example, you have a 110 ml bottle of perfume. And no matter how many spirits are left in it, these spirits will still not be allowed on board the plane.

To transport perfume in hand luggage, you can buy special train bottles not exceeding 100 ml.

Carrying food in hand luggage

Most airlines allow you to take food on board.

But it should be remembered that in the European Union there is a regulation that prohibits the import of dairy and meat products.

What products can you take on board the plane?

  • fruits, dried fruits, nuts
  • chocolate or candy

  • sauces
  • cottage cheese

Carry-on luggage for children

If you are traveling with a small child under two years of age without a separate seat, you will most likely be allocated an additional piece of carry-on baggage that is a standard size but slightly lighter in weight.

You can also replace your (non-child) piece of hand luggage with a stroller or carrycot (if it folds and can fit in the compartment above the seats).

Airplane flights from one city to another have long become an integral part of our lives.

It is difficult now to find a person who has never flown on an airplane in his entire life.

Flying by plane is the easiest and fastest way to move around geographical space.

But, nevertheless, even experienced passengers often have questions: “What can you take on a plane?” “What can you take in hand luggage on a plane?”, “What should you check in as checked luggage?” And those who are flying for the first time ask even more questions: “Can I take alcohol on the plane?”, “Can I bring cosmetics?”, “What can I take on the plane if I’m flying with a child?”

Even greater confusion is caused by transportation rules, which may differ between different carrier companies. Let's try to put everything on shelves, or rather in suitcases.

Definition

Hand luggage is items that a passenger can carry in the cabin. These include bags, backpacks, cases, bags, baskets. When checking in for a plane, the weight of hand luggage is checked.

IMPORTANT The number of hand luggage items does not matter, you can carry as many bags as you like, the main thing is that their total weight and established size standards do not exceed those declared by the carrier.

Carry-on baggage allowance

Standard hand luggage allowed for transportation in the cabin must be no more than 115 centimeters, the sum of height, width and length (55 by 40 by 20). The permissible total weight of hand luggage depends on the ticket class.

For business class passengers, carry-on baggage weight is allowed no more than 15 kg per person, and for economy class and comfort class passengers no more than 10 kg per person.

These are standard norms for most airlines, including Aeroflot. In some cases, these standards may differ from generally accepted ones. This information can be obtained from the baggage rules of a specific airline.

What can you take on board the plane in hand luggage?

The question is especially relevant during a long flight. Many airlines try to make the flight as comfortable as possible for passengers and, in addition to hand luggage, allow some additional things to be taken into the cabin.

This list included

  • Handbag,
  • Diplomat,
  • Folder with documents,
  • Laptop in a special bag,

ADVICE FROM EXPERIENCED TRAVELERS: try to put all the necessary things on yourself or put them in your pockets. You can use a special travel jacket, which has a large number of spacious pockets.

Why take luggage into the cabin?

Most companies offer fairly comfortable conditions for transporting luggage in a special luggage compartment. Therefore, you can entrust your luggage to the airline at the check-in stage. It is recommended to take only items that you plan to use during the flight and especially fragile items in your hand luggage.

IMPORTANT: You must take documents, precious items and all available gadgets in your hand luggage.

When packing your hand luggage bag, remember that the bag with your main luggage can get lost; this happens rarely, but no one is immune from this. Therefore, you should also take essential items to the salon for an emergency - cosmetics, personal hygiene items, a change of clothes.

Which bag to choose for carry-on luggage?

Comfortable and roomy. The best option is a backpack or bag with many compartments, as well as transformable bags that easily change their size depending on the degree of fullness.

Note!

What is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage?

It is better to familiarize yourself with such a list in advance; please note that there may be variations between different carriers.

The general list of items prohibited from being carried on board an aircraft is as follows:

  • Weapons and ammunition in any form, including souvenirs, toys, imitating the real thing, and so on,
  • Any flammable, explosive substances.

Disposable razors, or razors with replaceable blades, or electric razors are allowed in hand luggage.

Is it possible to take liquids into the aircraft cabin?

Transportation of liquids

This is one of the main points in the rules of any airline. Every year the requirements in this regard become more and more stringent. This is, first of all, a safety point, since explosive and flammable substances can be brought on board under the guise of liquid. Fluid limits will vary between airlines.

Thus, Aeroflot allows the carriage of up to one liter of liquid per passenger, provided that it is packed in sealed containers with a volume of no more than 100 milliliters each. Liquid food products must be sealed in a transparent bag measuring 20 by 20 centimeters.

In this case, liquid refers to all cosmetics, food and other non-solid substances. In most companies, liquids include shaving foam, toothpaste, gels, aerosols, creams, canned food, soups, jams, and so on.

Rules for transporting liquids

How to transport alcohol?

You can check in your luggage with alcohol of no more than 70% strength. Carrying alcohol in hand luggage depends on the carrier and destination country. This is possible when entering the United States. In relation to Russia, the issue is complex; each company decides this issue for itself.

For example, if you are flying with Aeroflot, you can take alcohol in your hand luggage; if you are flying S7, then alcohol will not be allowed on board. In any case, the consumption of your own alcohol on board is prohibited by any airline.

IMPORTANT, even if alcohol is allowed as hand luggage, it must be packed according to the rules for transporting liquids - packaging no more than 100 ml, with a total volume of up to 1 liter.

It is possible to take larger quantities of duty-free alcohol on board if it is packed in a branded bag with a receipt.

Is it possible to take some food on board?

This question often arises among those who travel by plane for the first time. During long flights, meals are provided on board for passengers. For those who like to eat home-cooked food and do not want to depend on the on-board dining schedule, food can be taken into the cabin.

It is important to remember the rules for bringing liquids on board the aircraft. And remember the rules of etiquette when choosing food; you should not take food with a strong smell; you should also avoid crumbling foods. The best option for a snack may be dried fruits, nuts, vegetables, sweets or fruits.

Transportation rules for non-standard baggage

As already mentioned, fragile items should not be checked into the luggage compartment to avoid the risk of damage. If you are traveling with animals, they should be transported in special cages in the cabin or in a special compartment.

In most companies, this service is paid and is equal to the cost of one piece of luggage. If you are transporting fragile items, musical instruments, or highly sensitive equipment of non-standard sizes, then this issue should be resolved individually. Compact instruments can be taken in hand luggage, large ones can be transported in a hard case in the luggage compartment, or you can buy a separate seat for them.

In most cases, they will meet you halfway. But remember that you will most likely need to pay extra for such a service. Surfboards, drills, drills, skates, bows and arrows, skateboards, skis and ski poles, screwdrivers and other tools, as well as hunting trophies and guns, fishing rods, scooters, Segways, hoverboards can definitely only be transported in the luggage compartment.

In most cases, you can bring on board cameras, a video camera, a laptop, tablets and smartphones, chargers for them, tripods, monopods, electronic toothbrushes, multicookers (if their dimensions meet the standards), irons, curling irons and hair dryers.

IMPORTANT: It is better to take your smartphone charger with you on the plane. In case of baggage delay, this will not give you the opportunity to be completely without communication.

But the blender can only be transported in the luggage compartment.

IMPORTANT: Some companies prohibit the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from being transported on board or in the luggage compartment, as there is a danger of it exploding during the flight. If you are the owner of this gadget, check the transportation rules in advance.

Can I take medications with me?

Medicines in solid form can be taken on board, in liquid, gel and spray form only in limited quantities in accordance with the rules for the carriage of liquids. If medications are vitally necessary, then they can be taken in any volume, confirming the need with a doctor’s certificate.

Mercury thermometers are prohibited for transportation, both in checked luggage and in hand luggage, but hydrogen peroxide can only be carried in hand luggage with a volume of no more than 100 ml. Injection syringes are allowed to be carried on board only for essential reasons (for example, for patients with diabetes) with the appropriate certificate; transportation in luggage is allowed.

IMPORTANT: Check to see if your medications are on the list of prohibited medications in your country of destination. Thus, carvalol is banned in the USA.

What to do if you are found with items prohibited for transportation?

Reasons for confiscation

There are enough such cases, since not all passengers are thoroughly familiar with the rules for transporting things before departure. Trivial items can become a reason for confiscation - scissors, toys - pistols, containers over 100 ml, and so on.

Most often, such things are simply thrown away in the inspection area. If the item is dear to you for some reason, discuss this issue with the administration; there will probably be a way to keep it, or send it to your luggage if it can be transported.

We are not talking about such prohibited things as weapons and drugs. If they are identified, the police will become involved in the case.

Prohibited items may be found in one of 4 baggage inspection situations

  1. In your luggage before check-in, in this situation, things can be handed over to mourners, or left in a car or luggage storage, and can also be sent by Russian Post to any address; most airports have its branches.
  2. in your luggage after you checked it on the flight, in such a situation, if it is possible to return to registration, then the item can be saved using one of the above methods. The item may be confiscated, but you will be able to receive it when you return if you agree on this with the airport staff.
  3. in hand luggage before passport control, if you can return to check-in, then the options for resolving the situation from point 1, or the opportunity to check the item as luggage, are suitable.
  4. in hand luggage after passport control, here is the option of either complete confiscation of the item, or if you manage to convince airport representatives of the value of the item for you, it can be transferred on board and given to you upon arrival. Sometimes airlines meet halfway and check things in as baggage themselves, then you can receive your property when it is issued. Sometimes things are stored at the airport until returned; it is important to draw up a document that will allow you to get it back.

Where is hand luggage transported?

The flight attendants will help you place your hand luggage comfortably. Typically, hand luggage is carried either on special shelves above the seats or under a chair on the floor. Before placing your carry-on luggage in the cabin, consider what you will need during the flight and place these items within easy reach.

  • Read the rules of transportation at the stage of purchasing tickets,
  • During the flight, pay attention to the recommendations of the conductors and follow their instructions,
  • Take warm clothes on board, because during the flight the air conditioners are turned on and it gets cold, and there may not be enough blankets for everyone.
  • You should not use gadgets during the flight, as this may affect the operation of the aircraft's instruments.
  • Be polite to passengers and crew.
  • Behave calmly and do not cause discomfort to others.

Now you are familiar with the basic rules for transporting things on airplanes. And even if there is something in your luggage that was overlooked in this article, you know how to keep your property safe and sound. It's easy for you to travel and quickly pass through the control zone.

Air travel is the fastest and most comfortable way for a passenger to get from point “A” to point “B”. It is difficult to find an adult citizen of our country who has not flown on an airplane at least once. But even experienced airline passengers cannot always accurately answer the question: “What can be taken in hand luggage and what cannot?” We will try to understand in detail all the intricacies of air carrier rules.

Definition of hand luggage and allowance

Carry-on luggage is the name given to the passenger's personal belongings carried in the cabin of the aircraft. Most often these are bags, packages, baskets and backpacks. It is important to understand that it is not the number of items that is counted, but their total volume and weight. How many bags can you take? As many as you like, the main thing is that together they comply with established standards. The standard one that can be taken into the salon is 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions (55x40x20 cm). At the same time, the total weight of passenger bags should not exceed 10 kg for economy and comfort classes; 15 kg for business class. Please note that these are the standards of many major air carriers, including Aeroflot. Some companies set their own requirements for the permissible weight and volume of hand luggage. When using the services of a particular carrier for the first time, you should familiarize yourself with its rules.

What can you take into the cabin, besides hand luggage?

On long flights, passengers want to have as many personal items as possible on hand. Airlines are doing their best to accommodate their customers. Not long ago, a list of items allowed for transportation in the cabin in addition to hand luggage appeared. a diplomat or folder with documents up to 30x40x10 in size is not included in cabin baggage and can be carried by a passenger. During the flight, you can carry 1 laptop, carried in a special bag, and 1 camera/binoculars. In addition to hand luggage, you can take 1 umbrella and a limited amount of newspapers into the cabin for reading during the flight (2-3 newspapers/magazines or 1 book). Each passenger can carry one package of Duty Free purchases. What clothes and accessories can you take in hand luggage? Almost everything respects the general dimensions and weight. Experienced travelers advise: try to wear as much as possible and put it in your pockets. Do not forget that the clothes worn by the passenger (including outerwear during cold periods) are not considered hand luggage. If you fly often, pay attention to special jackets for travelers with many spacious pockets.

Packing your bag for the trip correctly

Most airlines offer their customers very favorable conditions for baggage transportation. It would seem, why take anything else into the salon? But it is still difficult to completely do without hand luggage. We recommend that you pack the bag you will take with you on the flight at the same time as your main suitcase. In your hand luggage you need to put all the most valuable and fragile things, as well as items that you may need during the flight. Be sure to take documents, money, jewelry and electronics with you into the cabin. If you are bringing some fragile souvenirs with you, it also makes sense to place them in your hand luggage. Don't forget about cosmetics. We will describe in detail below how to package liquid cosmetics. When collecting cabin luggage, remember that a suitcase checked into the luggage compartment may get lost. Unfortunately, none of us are immune from such troubles. Accordingly, it would be a good idea to put a full set of clothes for a change in a small travel bag. What hand luggage can you take on a plane, and where should you put your cabin luggage? The most convenient options for packing essentials: a bag or backpack with many compartments. Choose transformers that easily change their external dimensions. This is very convenient if you are flying with a company that has more stringent requirements for hand luggage. Using a transformable bag, you can always change its size in one motion.

List of Prohibited Items

When packing for a trip, be sure to study and remember the list of things that cannot be taken on board the plane. Airline passengers are prohibited from transporting any weapons, as well as souvenirs and children's toys depicting them. You cannot take any flammable, explosive or toxic substances with you into the aircraft cabin. Attention: household chemicals, cosmetics and some medications fit the description of this category. Many women are accustomed to carrying a manicure set in their handbag. Put it out urgently, since any sharp, piercing or cutting objects cannot be carried in hand luggage. In particular, these are cutlery, knives, tools, cosmetic and medical accessories.

Aeroflot rules. Carry-on luggage: what liquids can you take into the cabin?

Transportation of any liquid substances is a special point in the rules of any airline. From year to year, the standards are becoming more and more stringent, and this is done solely for safety reasons. The thing is that, under the guise of household liquids, terrorists have repeatedly tried to smuggle explosives on board. How much liquid can you take in your hand luggage today? Let's look at the example of the standards of the largest air carrier in Russia - Aeroflot. One passenger can take into the aircraft cabin no more than 1 liter of liquids packed in containers with a volume of no more than 100 ml. All liquid products must be stored in one resealable transparent bag, the recommended size is 20x20 cm. The definition of “liquid” includes any cosmetics, food, and other non-solid substances. Carefully study the rules of a particular airline. In most cases, products such as lipstick, toothpaste, cosmetic creams, canned food, soups, jam and caviar are also considered “liquids”.

Duty Free purchases

Many airline passengers love to shop at Duty Free. Airline companies please their customers with the absence of strict requirements and restrictions in this regard. Today, each passenger has the right to carry 1 package of Duty Free purchases with him in the aircraft cabin. Take the time to study the intricacies of the legislation of the country into which you are importing such luggage. For example, one person can bring only 2 liters of alcoholic beverages and 2 cartons of cigarettes into Russia. When flying on transit flights, the Duty Free package becomes part of the passenger's carry-on luggage during a transfer. Remember this rule, and if you plan on shopping during the flight, leave enough space in your cabin luggage for purchases.

Is it possible to take food into the cabin of an airplane?

A popular question among novice air travelers is: “Can I take food and snacks in my hand luggage?” During long flights, passengers are provided with meals on board. But it is still much more pleasant to have, albeit a small, personal supply of food. Food products can be taken in hand luggage. The main thing is not to forget about the norms for transporting liquids. Respect the people around you and try to choose foods that don’t have a strong smell for a snack on your trip. It is also advisable to take with you for snacks foods that do not crumble. The best option is dried fruits, nuts, fruits, vegetables, sweets.

Rules for the carriage of non-standard baggage

It is not recommended to place fragile or valuable items in the luggage compartment, as the risk of damage is too great. If you plan to take anything unusual with you on your trip, check with your airline representative when purchasing your ticket. Animals are allowed to be transported in the aircraft cabin in specially equipped cages and carriers. Most airlines require an additional payment for this service in the amount of the cost of excess baggage. Is it possible to take musical instruments and large, highly sensitive equipment in hand luggage? Transportation of large and fragile items in the aircraft cabin is discussed individually. In most cases, air carriers accommodate passengers halfway. Carriage of non-standard luggage in the cabin is not always free. For example, a passenger may be asked to purchase a separate ticket for a large musical instrument and advised to transport it in a purchased seat.

Where is hand luggage stored?

If you are flying for the first time, do not hesitate to ask the flight attendants for help stowing your cabin luggage. Hand luggage in the aircraft cabin is carried on the overhead shelves (located above the passenger seats) and/or on the floor under the seats. Try not to put away things that will be used during the trip: snacks, gadgets, books and magazines. All the necessary little things can be placed on the folding table. If you're still wondering how much hand luggage you can take on a plane, choose two bags or one backpack and a bag. If you divide all the cabin luggage into two parts, it will not be difficult for you to manage it.

Be sure to check what you can take in hand luggage and what you can’t at the stage of purchasing a ticket. The thing is that the rules of different airlines may differ slightly. During the flight, listen to and follow all requirements and recommendations of the flight attendants. Remember, you cannot use most modern gadgets while flying. Computers, tablets and smartphones create and receive electronic signals that can interfere with the operation of aircraft controls. Be mutually polite to other passengers. Try to behave quietly and calmly, without creating inconvenience for others. Now you know what you can take in your hand luggage, and this is not such a small list of things. Many experienced travelers prefer to travel around the world with cabin luggage. Try and limit yourself to 10-15 kilograms of things. Perhaps traveling light will be an unexpectedly pleasant discovery for you.

As soon as you buy a plane ticket, or better yet, before booking your trip, pay attention to the baggage conditions. Each airline has its own requirements. The minimum information will be specified when booking the flight, and for details, go to the section of the carrier’s website where the conditions of transportation are indicated. What are the rules for things on an airplane?

Upon boarding, everything the passenger is carrying is inspected and weighed. It turned out that the suitcase exceeds the permissible weight or dimensions - difficulties will arise during registration, which threaten not only loss of time and nerves, but also unplanned expenses.

Pay attention! Musical instruments and animals are transported separately, regardless of the volume of other things. The free carriage norm does not apply to them; you will have to pay extra according to the tariff schedule.

In international air travel, there are 2 generally accepted measures for transporting passenger suitcases: weight concept and piece concept. Free and paid flight options with luggage are affected by:

  • service class,
  • flight duration,
  • luggage dimensions,
  • the weight of things
  • flight direction.

The weight concept or weight measure sets a limit only on the weight of passenger bags. Used by most carriers in Asia, CIS countries and some European companies. For adult passengers and children over two years old, the weight measure allows you to transport free of charge:

  • Economy - no more than 20 kilograms;
  • Business - no more than 30 kilograms;
  • The first - no more than 40 kilograms.

These restrictions include the combined weight of checked baggage and carry-on baggage per passenger. Information about the norm of things is placed on the purchased air ticket. If the requirements change, the carrier must notify the passenger. You are allowed to take no more than 10 kilograms with a size of up to 1.15 meters into the aircraft cabin without additional payment.

If a child under two years old is flying without a separate seat from his parents, the amount of things allowed for him will be 10 kilograms.

Piece concept or quantitative measure defines the number of units carried per passenger. Distributed by airlines in Canada, the USA, and most countries in Central and South America. Among Russian airlines, Aeroflot uses this measure.
With a quantitative measure, regardless of the ticket class, it is allowed to transport no more than two bags weighing up to 32 kilograms each free of charge. The combined weight of the seats does not matter and does not add up. Maximum dimensions for quantitative measure:

  • Economy - no more than 1.58 meters
  • Business - no more than 2.03 meters;
  • The first is no more than 2.03 meters.

Keep in mind: no matter the complexity or distance of the flight, loading and unloading of things is paid by the airline.

Oversized luggage

The following are considered oversized items on an aircraft:

  • a piece of luggage weighing more than 32 kg and measuring more than 2.03 m in all dimensions,
  • any sports equipment,
  • any musical instruments,
  • Appliances.

If you are flying abroad, remember: checked baggage is checked baggage, cabin baggage (hand baggage/carry-on) is hand luggage.

Carriage of baggage in excess of the norm will have to be paid; it is best to clarify the airline’s tariffs and payment terms and arrange them in advance. And at the front desk just show the receipt for payment for oversized items.

The airline may refuse to carry oversized baggage if there is not enough free space in the baggage compartment or cargo of that size does not fit into the loading hatches.

Transportation of fragile and valuable luggage

We recommend keeping important, fragile and valuable items and documents with you and taking them into the cabin if they are the same size and weight as hand luggage. If fragile and valuable luggage is large, but less than 75 kilograms, it will be allowed to be carried in the cabin on a separate ticket.

If fragile luggage does not arrive intact, the carrier will not admit guilt. After all, airline passengers are not legally responsible for the safety of fragile belongings.

If you weigh more than 75 kilograms, you will have to buy several pieces of luggage that are a multiple of the difference in luggage weight and the weight standard for 1 piece. There is no discount system for these tickets.

Hand luggage

Passenger belongings transported on an airplane are divided into:

  • luggage - these items travel in the luggage compartment and are handed over to the carrier's employees at the check-in counter before boarding the plane;
  • hand luggage - things that a passenger takes with him into the aircraft cabin; the airline limits them in weight and volume.

Typically, hand luggage should fit into the standard: when traveling in economy class, the weight is 10 kilograms with a size of no more than 1.15 m; when traveling on business, the weight of the suitcase should not exceed 15 kilograms, the sum of dimensions should not exceed 1.15 m.

In excess of the norm, without taking into account the total weight of baggage, a passenger may carry into the aircraft cabin:
flowers and a woman's handbag, a coat and a stole, an umbrella and a book, a camera and a camera, a laptop and a tablet, a stroller for a child, a bag of groceries or a package.

But it is not exactly)
Low-cost airlines greatly narrow the list of things you can take with you. Check the exact list on your airline's website.

Baggage on a regular flight

Each airplane passenger can carry a certain amount of things without paying. The exact volume depends on the type of aircraft and airline regulations. One of the advantages of flying with large companies with regular flights is the large baggage allowance. Carry up to 23 kilograms in checked luggage and up to 7 kilograms in hand luggage free of charge.

The exact amount of free baggage is always indicated on your ticket.

When purchasing tickets for a regular flight at a discount, check with the airline for the maximum size of items in your luggage and cabin. Understand the maximum as approximate. It is important that the sum of the three dimensions of the height, width and depth of the passenger's bag is less than the sum of the dimensions in the airline's chart.

Flying with luggage on low-cost airlines

The allowed baggage size for low cost airlines is significantly smaller than usual. Some low-cost airlines do not allow luggage to be transported without additional payment, and they also severely limit the amount of hand luggage allowed on the plane.

Air discounters strictly check that items comply with the rules and make money from inattentive passengers who have not read the transportation rules. Near the check-in counter and at the exit to the plane there are scales and frames in which hand luggage must be placed. If the bag is larger, you will have to check it as luggage and pay a fair amount.
You will be allowed on a budget company plane with only 1 piece of luggage. Some low-cost airlines will still allow you to bring an additional handbag and laptop into the cabin. Read the airline rules carefully.

If your carry-on baggage is larger than the allowance and there is nothing to put away, then check in and pay for your baggage in advance online before arriving at the airport. Checking your luggage at the counter before boarding will cost twice as much. And payment at the gate upon boarding will result in a substantial amount.

Advice! Low-cost airlines do not limit the amount of clothing a passenger can wear. Wear the bulkiest and heaviest things possible.

Flying with a discount airline allows you to save a lot of money, but take as little luggage as possible and carefully read the rules for transporting baggage and hand luggage. Then there will be no problems and no loss of money when boarding the flight.

Baggage allowance on charter

The norms for carrying things on a charter flight are determined by the tour operator who sells the tour and is the charterer of the aircraft. On charter flights, passengers are allowed to carry one piece weighing no more than 20 kg and 10 kg for children under 2 years of age (if a separate seat is not provided for the child). The free baggage allowance for charter flights is the same for business and economy class.

Most often, charter companies add up the weight of seats for passengers flying together. But it’s better to divide your luggage evenly, since the company simply will not accept items weighing more than 30 kg for transportation without additional payment.
The hand luggage allowance on charters is 5 kg per passenger. On a charter, they do not strictly monitor the dimensions of luggage and hand luggage; a slight excess is often allowed through without additional payment.

What to do with luggage when flying with a transfer

You can travel in transit on planes of the same or different airlines. It’s more convenient when you change trains without changing the carrier company:

  • all flights will be included in one ticket,
  • you hand over your things at the airport of departure and receive them upon arrival,
  • Airline employees are responsible for the transportation of your belongings.

If you are carrying things that need to be declared, you will have to receive your luggage at the intermediate point and check it in yourself after inspection for the next flight.

It’s more difficult when you fly on several airlines. If the companies are partners and you checked your luggage to your final destination, there will be no differences. But when the carriers are not connected with each other, you will have to work hard:

  • there will be separate tickets for each flight,
  • things will have to be received and returned again at the transit airport,
  • being late for a connection and keeping your luggage safe is your headache.

If you have a connection, allow more time to go through registration and move around the airport. Familiarize yourself with the airport map in advance and plan your route to the connecting point. Travel only with hand luggage.

When we fly without luggage

More and more independent travelers are choosing to fly without checking luggage. Flying with hand luggage is the best way to save time and money and get only positive emotions from the flight.

Save time

Checking in and checking luggage takes time, as does standing in line to check in. Travel with hand luggage and check in before arriving at the airport - avoid standing in line and wasting time.

Another waste of time is getting your luggage. Waiting for luggage after the plane arrives can take up to 1.5 hours depending on the arrival airport. If you only have hand luggage with you, you can go about your business immediately after leaving the plane and going through passport control.

Enjoy your flight

A traveler's worst nightmare is the airline losing your suitcase. Of course, most often things are found, but this unpleasant experience is not worth going through. But what about fears that the suitcase will be damaged during loading or that it will be opened and something valuable will be stolen?
When your things travel side by side in the cabin of the plane, there will be no frantic worries or worries. A comfortable and roomy bag that you take as hand luggage guarantees the absence of unnecessary worries.

Avoid unnecessary spending

Overweight is a frequent and unpleasant phenomenon for travelers, which threatens additional expenses. In addition, when flying without luggage, you can easily travel with low-cost airlines with their incredibly low price tags.

The main difficulty when flying with hand luggage is the ability to discard unnecessary things. Learn to hit the road with a minimum of luggage. This is especially useful during connections and complex routes. Take everything with you on the plane and your mobility will allow you to visit more places in one trip.

What can you take on a plane in hand luggage?

If you fly with luggage, take into the cabin only what you need during the flight: your favorite book, gadgets, documents and a warm jumper. It is better to keep valuable and fragile items with you too. But if you are traveling exclusively with hand luggage, check which things to pack and which things you will have to leave at home.

A standard “flight” bag should not exceed 1.15 meters in total in all dimensions or be no more than 55x40x20 centimeters. The permitted weight depends on the carrier, but can rarely exceed 10 kg per passenger. If the dimensions are not met, you will have to check in your luggage.
Low-cost airline requirements for the size of a flight bag can vary significantly. If you don’t want to pay extra, read and fulfill all the conditions of the low-cost carrier.

List of things allowed on the plane

  • Food: You can bring any solid food onto the plane. Do not attempt to bring in liquids, jellies or creams larger than 100 ml. Take your child’s food and drink with you in reasonable quantities and do not have to put it in plastic, but you will need to present it during inspection. Be prepared for additional questions and requests to open and try the content.
  • Medicines: take any non-liquid medicines in reasonable quantities, it is better if they are in the original packaging and with instructions. If you have a large quantity of medications or if the drugs contain narcotic substances, have a prescription and a certificate from your doctor with you to avoid problems at customs.
    The volume of liquid medications and sprays should be less than 100 ml. But you cannot bring aerosols and syringes.
  • Equipment: the list of devices that can be carried by plane depends on the country's security requirements. Usually there are no problems when transporting a phone, laptop, tablet, camera and player. You can also take small household appliances (electric razor, electric toothbrush and hair dryer). If suspicion arises, the inspection service may require you to turn on the device and demonstrate its operation.
    If you are carrying equipment in your hand luggage, remember that the airline limits the number of items in the cabin per passenger and their size.
  • Documents and valuables: it is better to take your passport and all documents necessary for travel (hotel reservations, tickets and car rental), as well as valuables, into the cabin of the plane. If your luggage is lost, all the documents necessary for your stay in the country will be on hand.

  • Cosmetics: Carry bulk and dry cosmetics without any problems, but with liquid cosmetics it is more difficult: the total volume of liquid substances in your hand luggage should not be more than 1 liter, and the volume of one bottle should not exceed 100 ml. If the conditions are not met, you will have to throw away your favorite products during security or return to the check-in counter and check them in as luggage. Aerosols and pressurized containers are prohibited from being taken on flights; replace them with dry products.
  • Hygiene items: there is a ban on piercing and cutting objects on the plane, regardless of their size, so nail scissors, combs with a sharp metal handle and straight razors cannot be carried. Take the paste in a tube of less than 100 ml to avoid problems.
  • Baby accessories: airlines allow you to take a stroller or baby carrier on the plane at no additional cost. They are checked in as hand luggage and handed over to the staff upon entering the cabin.

How to carry Duty Free goods on a plane

You can buy Duty Free products in the duty-free trade zone or during an international flight. There will be no problems with solid goods, but when transporting liquids (perfume, alcoholic drinks, etc.) you need to be aware of the rules:

  • Duty free products must be specially sealed and packaged;
  • do not open the package until you arrive at your destination and pass control;
  • A bottle unpacked at the airport may be prohibited from being taken on a flight.

After purchasing alcoholic beverages at Duty Free, find out the customs requirements for the export and import of strong drinks in the destination country. When purchasing from Duty Free on a complex route, find out the rules for transporting goods in the transit country and the requirements of the carrier.

When returning to Russia, you can carry no more than 3 liters of alcohol per passenger free of charge. When transiting through the Schengen zone, alcohol will be required to be checked in as baggage. And when departing from US airports, only alcohol purchased at American Duty Free will be allowed in the aircraft cabin.

Not all low-cost airlines allow you to carry a package with Duty Free without additional payments; it is considered a separate place and you will have to pay for transportation.

What is prohibited from being carried on an airplane?

It is prohibited to carry any dangerous substances or objects on the plane that could harm other passengers. These are all types of weapons and weapons-like toys, radioactive, poisonous, corrosive substances and gases under pressure. The customs service also has its own restrictions, they relate to money, jewelry, alcohol, tobacco, various valuables and art objects.

Usually, budget travelers don’t think of packing anything from this list, but on signs at the airport you’ll see just such a list of prohibited substances.

Rules for carrying liquids on an airplane

On the plane you will be allowed to take a maximum of 1 liter of liquid substances, in addition, all products are asked to be poured into separate 100 ml containers. Moreover, liquids include only water, but also any creamy or jelly-like products.

Please note that it is prohibited to transport liquids in partially filled containers larger than 100 ml. If 50 ml of shampoo is packaged in a 400 ml bottle, you will have to part with the product during inspection.

  • stock up on mini-packs, preferably with the volume indicated on the package;
  • distribute all liquid and cream products into containers;
  • pack all the products in one transparent bag, preferably 20 by 20 centimeters in size;
  • check that the total volume does not exceed 1000 ml (10 containers).

Where can I get the correct 100 ml containers? Leave the mini-packs that are given when you check in at hotels: you will have shampoo, body wash and cream. Buy miniature cosmetics or a travel set of cosmetics, it contains 50-100 ml of products. There are universal packaging of containers for travelers on sale; all you have to do is pour your favorite products and pack your luggage.

A Zip-Lock, which is sold at any office supply store, is perfect as a package. And yet, the volume of liquids of travelers flying together will not be added up.

How to avoid losing luggage during a flight

If you are afraid of losing your luggage during a flight, take steps before your flight to reduce the likelihood of loss:

  1. Remove used luggage tags after your flight. An airport employee will easily make a mistake if the suitcase is hung with old tags and stickers, and will send the baggage along a different route.
  2. Keep valuable and necessary things with you. If it is not easy to replace an item, take it to the cabin, because the carrier is not responsible for the loss.
  3. Label the outside of the suitcase, indicate the city, last name and contact, preferably in English. Inside the bag also put a piece of paper with contacts and a request to return the luggage.
  4. Take a photo of the bag inside and out, keep a list of all valuables, it’s great if you can justify their value by presenting a receipt.
  5. Remove the external straps during the flight - they will get caught on the transport line and the suitcase will get stuck.
  6. Wrap your luggage in film, use packaging at the airport, or wrap it yourself. Stretch packaging will protect against burglars and damage during transportation.
  7. Choose discreet models or buy a special case. Luxury suitcases attract unnecessary attention; expensive bags can be stolen for the purpose of theft.
  8. Install it on a combination lock and change the code: this will protect the bag from opening when dropped and zipped and will scare away or at least slow down robbers.
  9. Insure your luggage against loss: if the suitcase is lost, the insurance company will reimburse the amount of damage. To do this without any hassle, use one of the stores to buy insurance online

Why does luggage get lost?

  • 50% of luggage is lost due to failures and inconsistencies in airport operations,
  • 15% of bags are not loaded onto the plane due to a lost or missing luggage tag,
  • 15% remain on the baggage belt - passengers simply do not pick them up,
  • 20% of luggage goes missing in other ways for various reasons.

Where do our missing suitcases end up?

When checking in, a special tag with markings is hung on the bag; the ten-digit barcode contains complete information about the luggage:

  • Last 6 digits - unique baggage identifier
  • 3 digits in the middle - flight number designation
  • The first digit is the baggage class.

The tag is a guide that allows the airport system to direct luggage along the correct route, moving along the transport belt the suitcase ends up at the desired point: the luggage compartment of the aircraft or the baggage claim area. If there is no tag, there is a problem on the line or the barcode is not read correctly - the bag ends up as lost baggage or flies on the wrong route.

Where do suitcases disappear at the airport?

    1. To distant distances: if a mistake is made in the marking of the tag, the suitcase will fly on its own journey: another city, country, continent - the larger the airport, the more exotic the suitcase’s route can be.
    2. Into the desperate unknown: the tag is torn or loosely affixed and is lost when the suitcase passes the transport belt; such unmarked bags end up in the area of unidentified baggage.
    3. To the suitcase detectives. If a suitcase is lost or left uncollected from the transport belt (yes, this also happens) and the tag on it is intact, suitcase detectives come into action. By punching the barcode in the internal system, they find all the data about the owner and contact him to please him with the news of the find.
    4. On the international wanted list. World Tracer System is an international baggage tracing system in which most airports in the world participate. The system is automated and searches for missing luggage itself, comparing the route, color, size and weight of the bag within 100 days; you just need to fill out an electronic application using a special form.
    5. For opening and inspection: if the owner of the luggage does not show up within 5 days, the suitcase is opened, because personal belongings can help in finding the owner. If after 2 weeks the owner of the bag has not been found, it is sent to a storage warehouse.
    6. For auction: as soon as 100 days or 3 months have passed, the search for the owner of the lost luggage stops. All such bags end up on a special sale, where they are sold without opening. The starting price is very low, and the contents will be a surprise for the buyer. This kind of auction is quite popular in Europe and America, because there is always a chance to buy a suitcase with valuables inside.

What to do if the airline has lost your luggage

  1. check in the oversized baggage delivery area: non-standard suitcases, skis, strollers or sports equipment will not be waiting on the conveyor belt, but in a special delivery area.
  2. contact Lost & Found: at every airport there is a service that searches for luggage. It is easy to find by following the Lost & Found signs. Show your luggage tag, identification document and fill out the application. It is important to describe the bag in detail and provide special features.
  3. notify the airline: it would not be superfluous to go to the airline counter at the airport and ask them about the procedure; if your luggage is lost on a charter, start from here.
  4. 3 weeks have passed and the suitcase has not been found - it’s time to submit an application to the airline for monetary compensation for lost items. A photo of the contents, an inventory of things, and saved receipts will come in handy here.
  5. If the airline refuses, we go to court, in such cases the judge usually sides with the passenger, and the carrier will have to compensate for material and moral damage.

The suitcase is found in another city or country - the airline is obliged to transport it at its own expense and deliver the baggage free of charge to the address specified by the passenger - this is an international rule that all carriers comply with.

If your suitcase is lost and you find yourself in a foreign country without all your belongings, contact the carrier company for compensation. Many international airlines allocate a small amount for essentials in such situations.

  3. inform the air carrier in advance that you are flying with sports equipment, indicating the dimensions and weight;
  4. pack your equipment carefully and securely, it is better to use special cases for transportation;
  5. do not forget that sports equipment is issued in the oversized baggage area, and not on the transport belt;
  6. traveling with your own gym equipment is rarely cheap, but the experience is worth it.

Guide: baggage and hand luggage allowances for 10 popular airlines

Air carriers, in particular low-cost airlines, continually tighten requirements for hand luggage and baggage, forcing passengers to pay more. So that you don’t get lost in the stream of constant rules updates, we have collected in one material the rules of ten popular airlines, knowledge of which will allow you to save tens, or even hundreds of euros.

Important nuances

  1. Review the policies of each airline you'll be traveling with and make sure your carry-on and baggage comply with the stricter policies.
  2. Please note that you can buy tickets from and fly from. This happens when a code sharing agreement is signed between companies. In this case, the rules of the airline whose code is indicated on the ticket apply. It is useless to prove at the airport that you did not know - you will have to pay for excess weight or additional baggage space.
  3. Many airlines check the dimensions of hand luggage using special devices at the airport. Everything that doesn’t fit in the frame will have to be checked in as luggage (particularly zealous ones will take into account even handles that stick out half a centimeter). We recommend that you check your hand luggage in advance - luggage at the check-in counter is cheaper than at the gate; it’s even better to foresee this situation when purchasing air tickets online.
  4. Important! Low-cost airlines do not have connecting flights. Each route segment is a separate flight, so each time you need to pick up your luggage and check it in again, therefore, you also need to pay extra for it on each segment.

Liquids in hand luggage. Is it possible or not?

In total, you are allowed to carry 1 liter of liquids in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters each. The volume of the container matters: a two-liter bottle with two sips of juice left in it will not be allowed through. All liquids must be placed in a clear zip-lock bag (such as a Ziploc bag for freezing fruit or a makeup bag) and presented for security screening if you are asked to do so.

Liquids include:

  • roll-on deodorants;
  • shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel;
  • toothpaste;
  • perfumes and eau de toilette;
  • toner, makeup remover, cream, mascara;
  • alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks;
  • medications: eye, nasal and ear drops, solutions and tinctures for oral administration, products for external use, gels;
  • some food products: soft cheese, yogurt, pate, jam, honey, etc.
  • Travelers with children under two years of age. Food for the child (mashed potatoes, milk, juices, formula, etc.) can be in packages of any size in the quantity required for the duration of the flight.
  • Those who need to take medications regularly. In this case, you can take medications with you in packages larger than 100 milliliters, but do not forget to bring a certificate from your doctor.

What about duty free purchases?

Perfume, eau de toilette, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from duty-free shops can be taken on board if they are packaged with the receipt and sealed (do not try to drink whiskey from your throat on the plane).

Difficulties may arise if you are flying with a transfer. Thus, it is prohibited to import liquids into the EU in containers whose volume exceeds 100 milliliters if they were purchased outside the EU. That is, if you are flying from Kharkov to Prague via Warsaw, at the transfer point a bottle of wine from Ukrainian duty free will most likely be confiscated. For those traveling within the EU, it is enough not to print the package and have a receipt with you confirming that the purchase was made no more than a day ago. In any case, the last word remains with the airport employee.

Is it possible to carry food in hand luggage?

Yes, but if they are liquid, they will need to be packaged in 100 milliliters and packaged in accordance with the rules. Feel free to bring cookies, chocolate, apples, nuts or sandwiches on board, but make sure that your food does not emit any strong odors.

Can I take electronic devices on a plane?

Need to! You've seen how they handle suitcases at airports, right?

In hand luggage you are allowed to carry:

  • laptops;
  • Cell phones;
  • tablets and e-readers;
  • e-Sigs;
  • cameras;
  • hair dryers, curling irons, hair straighteners;
  • electric shavers;
  • electric toothbrushes;
  • power banks.

What is prohibited from being carried in hand luggage?

In short, anything that is potentially dangerous to passengers and crew members due to its toxicity or can be used for attack.

  • liquids in containers with a volume of more than 100 milliliters (except for those purchased at duty free and properly packaged);
  • aerosols (hairspray, deodorant, mosquito repellent, etc.);
  • piercing and cutting objects: screwdrivers, drills, nails, corkscrew, sewing needles, blades, all types of knives, scissors, nail files, tweezers with sharp ends, knitting needles, etc. There are exceptions: sometimes you are allowed to carry a knife with a blade shorter than 6 centimeters or tweezers with rounded edges; if you have a doctor’s certificate, you can take injection syringes with you. But you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario: if the item is dear to you, check it in your luggage or leave it at home.
  • firearms and any imitations thereof (lighters, children's toys);
  • adhesive tape, electrical tape;
  • explosives and flammable substances: gunpowder, firecrackers, fireworks, lighter fluid, etc.;
  • mercury thermometers (in some countries this restriction does not apply, but it is better to buy an electronic one and not worry);
  • skates, ski and trekking poles;
  • stun guns;
  • caustic and toxic substances: acids, alkalis, poisons;
  • bats, hockey sticks, clubs, nunchucks, oars, skateboards, fishing rods;
  • gas and petrol lighters.

Is it possible to carry animals on board?

Each airline has its own rules, so it is better to find out about them in advance. For example, UIA allows only dogs and cats weighing up to 8 kilograms to be transported in the cabin along with the container. Larger animals are transported in the luggage compartment. Service animals (for example, guide dogs) fly for free; for other pets you will have to pay at a special rate. The owner must have a medical certificate, documents confirming vaccination and an export permit.

How to transport musical instruments and sports equipment?

Sports equipment is usually transported in checked baggage or as oversized cargo at a special rate (if we are talking about skis or snowboards, for example). Even skateboards or tennis rackets will not be allowed on board, as theoretically they could be used as weapons.

Some airlines allow you to take small musical instruments that do not exceed the allowable size of hand luggage (flute, violin) into the cabin. Everything else will have to be checked in as luggage.

How to pack hand luggage correctly and what to do if it is overweight?

  • Place anything that will most likely have to be taken out at security control (laptop and other powerful equipment, a bag of liquids) on top so that you can quickly remove it later. Your neighbors and airport employees will be grateful to you.
  • Liquids should be packaged in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters, remember? If what you want to take with you is not sold in mini-packs, pour it - the bubbles do not have to be “original”.
  • If you are bringing medications with you, it is better that they are in original packaging with instructions inside. If you have sleeping pills, strong painkillers, psychotropic or injectable drugs, do not forget to take a prescription from your doctor with you.
  • Place everything valuable in your hand luggage: documents, money, jewelry, equipment. And don't forget to watch your backpack at the airport, of course.
  • You should always take with you a power bank, warm clothes, medications that you regularly take, and a light snack in case your flight is delayed.
  • Make sure you don't accidentally put anything on the list of prohibited items. The author of these lines, for example, once threw some tape into her backpack, and then blushed and made excuses in front of the vigilant employees of the Kutaisi airport.
  • If you are flying with a low-cost airline, do not fill your backpack to the limit. By leaving an empty space inside, you can compact it a little and fit it into a frame with which you can check the dimensions.
  • Weigh your assembled backpack or suitcase at home and make sure it meets airline standards. If the excess is discovered already at the airport, you can put on some of the clothes packed in your hand luggage, put heavy small items in your pockets, or pick up a camera, an e-book, etc., if the carrier allows this.
